EP Study and RF Ablation: A Patient’s Guide to Arrhythmia Treatment
An Electrophysiology (EP) Study and Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation are two common procedures used to diagnose and treat heart rhythm disorders. If your doctor has recommended them, understanding what to expect can ease anxiety and help you prepare.
What Is an EP Study?
An EP study is a minimally invasive test where thin wires (catheters) are inserted into leg veins/neck pain, unlike coronary angiogram catheter which is mostly done via hand and later on guided to your heart. The patient is awake and fully oriented during the procedure. These wires record electrical signals that are brought into the computer system and analyzed to identify abnormal heart rhythms.
What Is RF Ablation?
If the EP study detects abnormal electrical pathways (circuit), RF ablation is performed immediately. The doctor sends radiofrequency energy to destroy the substrate (abnormal circuit causing arrhythmia) of heart tissue causing the arrhythmia.
When Are These Procedures Recommended?
– For establishing the diagnosis of arrhythmia in case of unprovoked palpitation
– Patient with a fainting attack, undiagnosed palpitation, and fainting with injury.
– For conditions like AVNRT, WPW syndrome, Ventricular tachycardia , atrial tachycardia flutter and atrial fibrillation
The Procedure
– Performed in a hospital’s electrophysiology lab
– Takes 1-2 hours
– You may be awake but sedated
– Most patients go home the next day
Recovery & Aftercare
– Mild soreness at the catheter site
– Avoid heavy lifting for a week but routine work can be done
– Resume normal activities the next very day
– Follow-up with your cardiologist for ECGs or device monitoring
Benefits of RF Ablation
– High success rate for many arrhythmias and curative in many PSVT
– Permanent solution in most cases
– Reduces the need for long-term medications
Risks and Considerations
– Minor bleeding or bruising
– Rarely, heart damage or arrhythmia recurrence
Heartbeat Foundation’s Role
We offer access to EP studies and ablations through our hospital network and patient support programs. We also provide patient education and counselling.
Conclusion
EP Study and RF Ablation are effective, safe treatments for arrhythmia. With expert care and the support of Heartbeat Foundation, patients can return to a healthy, active life.
